BookBlast Hatchards Translation Book Club, Annie Ernaux News & Events

bookblast hatchards translation book club annie ernaux july 2024

Dear readers and friends of BookBlast,

Come and join our small but growing group of translation book club enthusiasts keen to explore different cultures and perspectives through literature,

On Monday 8 July

At Hatchards, 187 Piccadilly, London W1

We will be focusing on the celebrated 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Annie Ernaux.

Ernaux is essential reading for anyone interested in literature that transcends borders and time. Reading her is particularly resonant right now given the way in which the far-right National Rally party is dominating the French political landscape.

Her book, The Years, is a new kind of collective memoir, which captures the experiences of a generation. She intertwines introspective personal recollections with a broader collective shared memory of the social and political landscape of France from the 1940s to the early 2000s.

The way in which she portrays the aftermath of the Nazi-occupation of World War II, the cultural revolutions of the 1960s, and the rise of consumerism, gives a unique perspective on post-war Europe and illuminates the impact of historical events on personal lives. Her own experiences as a woman allows readers to see the evolution of women and their roles in society. The fragmented structure and evocative prose of The Years mirror the way memory works, capturing fleeting moments and emotions.

I was lucky enough to commission translator Tanya Leslie to translate three of her early works — A Woman’s Story (1991), A Man’s Place (1992), Simple Passion (1993) — during my first incarnation in book publishing, when I was commissioning and editing translations from the French in collaboration with the brilliant and visionary Editorial Director, Stephen Pickles, at Quartet Books.

Ernaux has now written over twenty books in a career spanning fifty years. Come and find out more!
